game jam entry. endless fps on a moving train

rambling man is a small shooter game i made by myself in just 7 days. i made it for two game jams called 7dfps and procjam. i also wanted to pay tribute to two musicians i love, dickey betts and gregg allman. because the game released just a week after their birthdays.

title screen

you are on a train. the train goes on and on and you are trying to survive as long as you can while things get harder. you earn xp for every kill.

gameplay

i spent a lot of time on the shooting feel. i wanted the guns to feel heavy and satisfying, even if the game looks simple. it’s all about that arcade vibe.

weapons

survive by researching and building better gear: a handgun, auto-rifle, or a big rifle. you use xp to research and build.

making it

making a game in one week is quite stressful but fun. i used unity for the code and magicavoxel for everything visual. i made all the voxel art and pixel art by myself! the world is procedurally generated while the train moves on rails.

i know the looks are not the best, but that’s normal for game jams. it’s more about the feeling :) i’m also not a 3d artist, that’s another story.

thoughts

game jams are a bit crazy. the hardest part was making the game balanced. if enemies are too strong, you get annoyed. if they are too weak, you get bored. i had to find the “sweet spot” while the clock was ticking.

it’s not a perfect game, but i’m really happy with how it feels to play. you can try it here if you want: itch.io.
