hacklab is a game i made for atom jam #2 with my brother burak can uşar in 72 hours. the theme was “cheating”, so we made a game where you have to cheat to survive.
story
the year is 2005. hacklab research facility is under attack by enemies trying to steal advanced prototypes. bad news: you work there. good news: you can use those prototypes to escape.
mechanics
you have to use “cheats” like wallhack glasses to see enemies through walls. or use infinite ammo magazines to defend yourself when things go wrong.
enemies react to sound, so running around is a bad idea. you can hide in vents, open drawers to find keys… basically classic stealth game stuff.
you can also talk to npcs. they will give you info about the facility. talking to them is important to know where to go and what to do.
making it
we built this in unity. my brother burak can uşar did the 3d modeling (using voxel art tools) and ui. i handled the programming and audio. level design, mechanics, and dialog system… all in 72 hours. it was a fun experience.
thoughts
as a half-life fan, i really liked the atmosphere we created. you might notice some half-life references in the story, gameplay, and even in the game’s name. anyway, i think it was a great idea to take game hacks (like wallhack) and turn them into actual game mechanics.
